‘Rectification’, De-escalation and Democratization: Changing the ‘Democratic and Popular Revolution’

It is not possible to understand the changes that occurred in Burkina Faso without briefly referring back to Sankara’s ‘project’ and its failure, as confirmed in the violent coup of October 1987. It was this failure, compounded by an economic down-turn making inevitable recourse to the IMF, that brought about the demise of the ‘révolution démocratique et populaire’ (RDP). This radical turn-around was implemented, however, in stages and under pressure. To begin with, Sankara’s successors intended only to ‘rectify’ the revolutionary process launched in 1983. They wanted to correct the mistakes laid at the door of the CNR and its president:4 to modify the system that they had inherited, but without altering its all-embracing character.5 However, worsening internal and external pressures subsequently forced them to implement liberalization on a far wider scale than they had originally envisaged.
